In the last major Powerball draw in June, there was a single Division 1 winner from Canberra who scooped a prize exceeding $60.7m and is now among the biggest lottery winners in Australian history

“I’m laughing. I’m lost for words. I’m pacing around,” he told officials from The Lott when they contacted him.

Nine Powerball division one winning entries across Australia have collectively taken home more than $311.2 million in 2022.

“Australia’s biggest lottery winner of 2022 so far is a Coffs Harbour man who wanted to park a new red sports car in the garage of a new house after we confirmed he’d won more than $63.3 million in a February Powerball draw,” said The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart.

If you didn’t strike it big don’t be disheartened, the odds of winning the Powerball division one jackpot with a single game are a mere one in 134,490,400.

But this list of Australia’s 10 biggest lotto winners of all time shows that sometimes incredible good fortune does strike.

In 2019, a Sydney nurse became Australia’s current individual lottery record-holder when she won $107,575,649.

She continues to work and says her philosophy has been to “pay it forward” and support causes she’s passionate about – as well as enjoying a more luxurious life.

Not every winner’s story is so uplifting. A young SA man won $22m on Powerball in 2017 but became addicted to drugs and ended up in court charged with serious offences after turning his home into a “party house”.

A $150m Powerball jackpot in 2019 was the biggest in Australian history, but it was shared among three winners.

Powerball is drawn from two barrels. Seven numbers are drawn from the main barrel with balls numbered 1-35, and one Powerball is drawn from a pool of numbers 1-20.

You can cut your odds by buying a PowerHit entry, which guarantees you get the Powerball number, but that of course costs a lot more for a ticket. Around half the division one winning entries in Powerball are from a PowerHit ticket.

Meanwhile, have you ever wondered which SA home lottery gives you the best odds?

From spectacular multimillion-dollar homes to luxury cars, glorious holiday retreats in the state’s best locations, caravans, ski boats, travel packages, wine and wads of cash, the prizes on offer to support a local charity are astonishing – and more extravagant than ever before.
